Test and Experiment

Author: glend

This is to emphasize the importance for affiliates to test, experiment and be flexible with their websites. Not all your links and promotional ideas will work well so it’s important to find out what is working, and what isn’t working.

If you’ve got a banner on your site and you haven’t earned a dime from it, then don’t just sit there cursing the banner and give up. Try creating a new page dedicated to promoting that product. If you’ve done that, then maybe the content needs to change - instead of focusing on one feature, turn your attentions to promoting other features. Maybe you haven’t mentioned anything about customer care or your content may not be encouraging enough for visitors to click through on your links.

A little bit of research can help you create better performing pages. See what the merchant’s competitors are doing, see how other affiliates are promoting the same product, find out how websites targeting the same audience as yours are promoting similar products, find out more about the actual products you’re trying to promote, etc.

Talk to the affiliate program manager. You maybe thinking that ‘If only they had a 100px x100px banner’ or ‘If only they had some more product details I could use’. If there’s something you could use that isn’t being provided then contact the affiliate program manager and tell them - that’s what they’re there for!

Subtle changes to a webpage can make big differences. Try placing banners in different spots, experiment with text by using bold letters, italic letters, larger letters, different colors, etc. The appearance and design of a page has a huge influence on a visitor.

When making changes it is important to track them and measure them. If you do not, then you’ll never know if there’s been any improvement. This isn’t a complicated procedure. Log into your affiliate admin page and check how many click-throughs and sign ups you got for the last week. Make a note of this. Then make your changes and after another week, go back into your admin area and run a report for the last week.

Compare those results with the previous week’s results to find out if any improvements have been made. It’s a constant circle of testing and measuring, finely tuning each page to maximize performance.

When you’ve created a page that is performing well for your site’s traffic then you can simply copy the key features of that page to create new pages promoting different products, increasing your potential to earn money. Re-read ‘Focus and Duplicate’ from Day 8.
